Colorado Epic Riding : June 2009

We've done a lot of exploring as a family over the years around Creed, Co, but It has always been on foot. I didn't really know what to expect on a bike, but I had an idea that there could be some spectacular riding around there due to the many high (12k+) mesa's around that area.

Ken and I set out the first day to do some exploring and we were not disappointed. At first we were both worried that we were in for some epic slogging through mud as there was still a lot of water running from snow melt. But, it turned out the ground was firm under the tundra and we were able to see the endless possibilities around the area near the cabins.

Felix helped me explore the area around Miner's creek. I can't wait until we can go out again on a trail that is a little more suited for mountain biking. The kid is going to just kill it I can tell. He was riding an old bike with no shocks and brakes from hell and he was doing pretty dang good.

On the last full day we were there Ken and I rode from Spring Creek Pass, east on the Colorado Trail towards Snow Mesa. It was a grueling climb to the top, but once there the trail disappeared into the horizon over a flat mesa at 12,500'. It was a top 10 ride across that mesa without a doubt. I have never ridden anything like that -- ever. It was a ride in the sky.

I guess it should have been expected, but the descent didn't give us the pay off we had hoped for. First we rode around the top of the mesa looking for the trail that would take us down. Whereas the Colorado Trail was well marked and quite good, the trail we were looking for on the map to take us down was non existent besides a few tumbled down cairns. Well what's an adventure ride without a goose chase.

Eventually we found a trail, which was bumpy as hell, but we weren't complaining at that point. We had about 1/2 mile of nice smooth singletrack before the trail started back uphill onto a scree field. Then it petered out onto a flat double track before hitting a developed dirt road. Not exactly the finish we had hoped for, but still a ride I'll never forget.
