Fairy Meadow. Just the name sends me into reverie. It is a place of dreams. Mountains, rock, ice, glaciers and crevasses.
This was my second trip. I've wanted to return since the first time I was there, which was also my very first hut trip to Canada. That trip changed my life. I knew that I had found a life long passion and have been pursuing it ever since. Backcountry skiing is like nothing else and the mountains around Fairy Meadow are some of the best skiing terrain anywhere in the world.
I was so psyched when the Alpine Club of Canada informed me that I my name had been chosen in the lottery for a chance to book the hut. However by mid August I was starting to stress out that I wouldn't be able to find enough people to fill all the spots. But, the word got out and before I knew it all the spots were taken, we were going, and i wasn't going to go broke
We really had a good group - 2/3 from SLC and the other 1/3 from Fort Collins, Colorado. Everyone on the trip was enthusiastic, fit and a strong skier. Our guides, Lila, Todd, and Mike, were great, as was our cook, Issac.
We didn't get to ski much powder on this trip but the weather made up for the lack of fresh snow. It was warm and sunny at the beginning of the week with very little wind. This allow us to do all the big ski tours in the area. On our fifth day we toured all the way to Mount Sir William, climbed to the peak then skied its massive flank. On our return to the hut we skied down to the lower glacier, then roped up and skied through the ice and crevasse field on the lower Granite glacier.
