It's kind of a long field trip from SLC, but worth the effort. Mom and Dad, Elizabeth, Martha and I left in the morning from our house and made it out to the Golden Spike National Monument by around noon. Unfortunately Martha and I had to make a 40 mile detour to gas up the car. We were running low and nobody (especially me) wanted to run out of gas in the middle of f---ing nowhere. The vultures would of eaten us and washed us down with salt, lots and lots of salt.
The drive out from Golden Spike epitomizes the western landscape in the Basin and Range region -- just vast vistas of desert and mountains. When the lake comes into view the drama spikes up a notch. It's easy to see why Robert Smithson picked this place for his masterpiece -- and it is a masterpiece, one one of the most important works of art in the 20th century.
I was just blown away by the whole experience visiting the site of this amazing work. The setting, the work itself and the combination of the two just really affected me deeply. I can't wait to go back again and plan to ride my mountain bike from Golden Spike on the next visit
