Josh set this plan in motion to go floating on a river somewhere in Texas with Augie and Felix. Neither of us had any experience in the arena, but we got some information on line and Josh talked to the guys at the kayak rental place and we decided on the Colorado river south of Bastrop.

It took as a while to get the rendezvous and get the kayaks so we had to postpone our departure until Sunday. There is a lot involved in getting on the river -- car shuttles -- etc, but we finally got away. Its kind of hard to explain all the logistics to a couple of excited kids -- Augie and Felix were really anxious to get underway.

After passing some amorous teenagers not far from the put in we were away and alone. Both Felix and Augie guided their boats like old hands. The plan was to camp on a sand bar -- we had been told that we should be able to find one easily. I was starting to wonder if we would find a good spot when a perfect long flat island appeared around a bend. We put in and set up camp. I felt like Huck Finn.

It was warm and beautiful again the next morning and we paddled the rest of the way to the take out in Bastrop. I hope it was only the first of many river trips with Augie and Felix
